Disentangling the stratigraphic architecture of the Rivoli-Avigliana end moraine system (Western Alps, NW Italy)

The Rivoli-Avigliana end moraine system (Italian Western Alps) hosts an important stratigraphic archive of Pleistocene glaciations. A new geological map provides a 3D architecture the that reveals complex glacial, alluvial and lacustrine units. Six glacial units were recognized. During deposition four older (Early-Middle Pleistocene) morphology valley outlet had different drainage pattern from present, with presence large lakes. From penultimate glaciation to Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) piedmont lobe was confined within valley, never extending towards Po Plain. LGM is characterized by two advances distinct recessional phases during Lateglacial. bedrock inselberg affected flow glacier front, which should have weak erosive strength as shown preservation deposits below
